Where you live has a large part to say about building paddles. I live in Fla. and have not found any good lumber to build decent paddles with. I would recommend buying a bladed paddle with an adjustible collet. This will allow you to toy with it until you get what you want and copy it into wood.Some of the new composite paddles can get down to 21 oz. and that is hard to beat in wood.
