Re: satin vs. gloss varni

Pettit also offers a flattening agent for their topside paints, and according to the manufacturer rep, this same product can be used to reduce the sheen of the high-gloss exterior varnish. This flattener should only be added to the final coat, and the same rep indicated that the satin varnish should never be used for exterior bright work. The gloss finish is more durable, but as others have noted, this is probably not a big deal on small craft which are not left out, uncovered, in the elements. I am still trying to decide if I want to use the flattening agent in my Jimmy Skiff varnish. I have a few more coats to go before I am done. I'll take votes if anyone wants to comment!
