While bow and stern lines are a real good idea, they are secondary to straps going across the yak and fastened to the rack. Ideally the straps are placed just behind and in front of the (one or more in the case of a double/triple) the cockpit coaming(s) to limit fore & aft movement.

The bow and stern lines are only snugged up, not pulled really tight.
