Yakima footbrace

I am installing the Yakima footbrace rudder control. Question: When the rudder is in the center position, do you align the sliders with the tracks ends to ends? This will affect the cable length. How do you keep the sliders from moving during installation? [I am finishing someone else's boat without the instructions. Appreciate your help.]
