I found some good, straight grained red oak at Home Depot for my Jimmy Skiff rubrails. I cut the 3/4" thick board into 1 1/2" widths and then used a 12:1 scarf joint to get the length I needed. The rubrails bent onto the boat without any trouble, and look good with varnish.
