water stains

I am re-glassing an 18 foot wood strip racing canoe that has glass delmination around a "bailing" fitting in the bottom center of the hull. Water has turned the strips nearly black in that area. There isn't any rot, only the stain. Is there any way to remove the stain without damage to the wood? I've already removed the glass using a heat gun to loosen the epoxy.
