Randy, I have no experience with a John's Sharpie, but I have built the Jimmy Skiff with a slightly extended deck, and compound curved deck rail which serves as a coaming (splash rail).

This link is to the page in my construction blog which shows the deck and the rear seat compartment. I used a round deck plate hatches in the floatation compartments.

I know it's not the same as on the sharpie, but thought it may give you some additional ideas.
