You might have read about having bow toggle lines long enough that allow you to hold the bow without twisting your hand if the kayak rolls while in the surf. Sounds to me the most dangerous thing to be holding a bow toggle in the surf - that is the pointed end and the pointed end of a 20-30 kg spear in surf isn't nice.

Decklines - hold on to the kayak amidships. In desperation, clip your lifejacket (and yourself) to the kayak - makes it easier to find the body later!!!
