...I'm also building mine from plans and following good advice from the book "Kayaks You Can Build"(Amazon or Chapters.com)...In the book they build a Mill Creek 13 and they suggest substituting the cockpit tape for a full 6 oz. glassing for abrasion resistance and good looks. I taped the fore and aft bulkheads and then just glassed the cockpit. I tacked the outer seams and removed all the stitches before fillets. This enabled me to make small smooth fillets. In the cockpit I allowed the fillets to cure. I did a quick sanding of the fillets before laying the full glass. I like the clean look, especially with such a large visible cockpit area.
