I've haven't read the whole thread, but the reason the fiberglass needs to wrap over the edge of the deck is to prevent moisture from penetrating the endgrain of the deck plywood at the deck edge. The 'glass certainly isn't holding the deck on in boats with sheerclamps. It IS holding the deck on with boats like the standard Shearwater and Sea Island Sport.
