The most important judgement you can make is of your personal sailing ability. Especially when the water is still cold. You can't expect the boat to make up for your shortcomings. My sailboat is small. Just 8' long. I got trapped by unexpected winds one time that had me so busy I couldn't even grab my water bottle. I managed to stay upright and had a fine time after that. But, for the first 10 minutes I was wondering why I was foolish enough to go out.
