Jim, you've struck upon a great idea: Practice with your saber saw on something else. Practicing should give you the confidence you need to tackle your hatches. Those junior hacksaw blades sound like a good candidate for a radius cutting tool. Again, practice on another piece of wood and watch out on the back stroke for lifting the grain of the wood.
