Thanks for all the responses. Sounds like the saber saw is the consensus choice of the veterans. If I was making any cut other than a gaping hole in my strip deck -- which took what seemed like forever to complete -- I would charge right ahead.

But first, I have another possible approach. I bought a pack of "Junior Hacksaw Blades" at the big box store. They are 6" long, 1/4" wide, and 0.020" thick. Fitted with a duct tape handle, I may be able to carefully cut the corners of the hatch opening. The challenge will be to make the radius. This will be pretty slow and tedious but, like I said before, I would gladly pay that price for the relative control of a hand operation. I'll practice with the sabre saw on something else.
