Re: Rudder for Pax 20

The Pax 20 is a long needle and has a retractable skeg to be deployed in surfing conditions, when 19-inch wide boats become an enormous challenge to control. In smooth water it's the proverbial rail. (Thus the skeg is retractable.)

A lot of Pax 20 builders have installed a rudder instead of the skeg. The main reason they do it is because some race courses require maneuvering.

Other Pax 18 and 20 builders have installed an Olympic K-1 style "trim" rudder underneath the boat at the retractable skeg location. I've seen photos but don't have any handy to post here in Madison. This is probably the fastest option. Also the hardest to fabricate, and you can't beach the boat as the rudder doesn't "kick up."
