Jim,

Maybe the joint was too tight. That looks like a nice woodworker's joint, not like an epoxy joint. Epoxy needs a bit more gap, whereas resorcinol and other wood glues need a tight gap with lots of pressure. Your workmanship may have been too good and have led to a starved joint, ins spite of your pre-soaking.

Nice post, BTW. It's good to see someone actually trying and documenting a controlled experiment.
