At 170 the 17 is going to feel like a tub, especially to her if she's short. The LT would be my pick if I were you. They will handle essentially the same, as far as I know (only paddled them in sheltered waters) but the 17 felt substantially bigger to me than the LT did. For what it's worth I'm 6'1, 165-170 pounds with a size 12-13 shoe.
