Re: Ches 17.

In 2000 I built a 3mm lauan plywood kayak (Yare). I found some good sheets at a grand opeing of a big box home supply. The laun now is soooooo cheaply made. The surface plys are paper thin and the core is full of voids. If you pick up a sheet flat often it will crack the surface plys. I gave up using it for small shipping crates, cardboard is better.
A strip deck is a great idea. On a standard Ches 17 the deck is too high and a recess in the deck is a big improvement.
