I've done a lot of surfing in the showroom Chesapeake 16LT and I wouldn't change a thing about that hull shape.

There are a bunch of things that could affect your handling experience in the 17LT. One clue is that you're building a smaller boat. Maybe you were too light in the 17LT? I'm 150 pounds and the 16LT feels great on me.
