If heater residue is your culprit, try using an electric oil radiator heater. Not the cheapest way to heat an area (nor the most expensive), but they produce a steady, mild heat with no oily emissions, and don't blow air around (read dust everywhere) like some heaters. After getting dust and stuff in my goop for half the winter, peace returned when I bought a cheap electric oil radiator heater and parked it under the boat shell.
