I'm going to bet it was your choice of heat. I had the same problem last winter when I used a propane heater. Whatever it puts out, it does so in a much larger quanity than kerosene. When using kerosene for heat, I was having problems with "fisheyes". When I switched over to a propane heater, the epoxy would flake off in very large patches. Does it look like this?
