CLC Rub Strip

How wide is the strip? I am afraid that it would not offer much protection since the bottom (Tred Avon double) is a shallow V. Would it be better to buy your own Dynel fabric so you can make it wider? I read about the brass strip (half oval), but I have the same conern.
