Agree with George. I don't know the Lie Nelson but the Stanley block plane from CLC has been very worthwhile investment for me. I don't hesitate to recommend it, and for uses far beyond your kayak build. The iron (removed from the plane) by itself is a tool worth the cost of the plane. Don't be put off if you have the bench plane of the same brand, which I find to be a wretched instrument in every way. As a fruit of British industry, the latter always puts me in mind of an MG carburetor, or even a Triumph motorcycle's ignition system.
