A common way to use these paddles is with the top edge tilted forward, called the "canted blade stroke". It helps to eliminate flutter and gives a very solid "bite". An old article that I wrote that discusses this is at http://www.qajaqusa.org/Technique/Greenland_technique_from_the_source.html .
