My understanding is that the full sized Ches 17 has been known to weathercock a little. When I built mine (from plans 4 years ago) I modified it by adding a cockpit recess. In the process I test paddled the kayak on a windy day before installing the coaming and cutting the cockpit opening to full size. I settled on moving the cockpit and seat aft three inchess from plan location to make the kayak wind neutral. I am still quite happy I made the mods.
