Vanish is just paint without any pigments. Lacquer thinner has acetone and other potent solvents in it. Some of the most potent lacquer thinner is so powerful it will curdle and lift paint on contact. Even if the lacquer thinner didn't curdle your varnish you may have altered the varnish chemically. I'd sand it way down and start over.
