Paint/varnish sequence ?

I am slowly closing in on the day the varnish and paint will be applied to my 16LT, and I have a question for the group. In my reading, I have not found the best way to sequence this activity. I plan to paint a design on the bow below the shear, and then add a pinstripe along the chine. (This is to cover some aggressive sanding boo-boos that I made early on...) Do I put the paint directly on the epoxy and then varnish over the whole deal? Or do I varnish and then paint over the varnish?
