That does leave you with the problem of removing the last of the sanding dust. You can wash it off with clean water, then dry with paper towels and leave for a while, or you can wipe it with a dry rag and remove the last remnents with a clean lint-free rag just slightly dampened with thinner, so the dust will stick to it. Don't rub hard. If the varnish has been on a few days, it can better withstand the thinner treatment.
