oh god no

So I am a hairs breadth away from throwing either myself or my kayak into the creek
After three coats of varnish (applied with an air sprayer) I had wet sanded and was tacking down with laquer thinner in order to apply what I had hoped would be my final coat. Then the worst happened: the laquer thinner REMOVED ALL THE VARNISH in a 1' by 2' patch between the cockpit and the aft hatch.
Bare glass baby, with gooey patches of varnish yuck
What did I do wrong? I am SURE that the CLC book suggested using laquer thinner.
