sand, clean, paint

varnish can really be ( in this case) considered paint without pigment. So make sure it has no scrapes, etc, sand it evenly like you would a previous coat of paint, and paint over it.

If you feel you might want to revert later, put on a good coat of new varnish, THEN sand that and apply the paint. Then you have a decent chance of getting rid of the paint if you change your mind.
