That's pretty much what I do, modified by a tip from the Skerry Builders Forum - use a laundry detergent bottle with the top cut off. It has a nice handle, is heavy duty, and you can square off the top to make it easy to use a scooping motion, kind of like what you describe. It's butt-ugly to have a hunk of plastic like that in the boat with you, but it works.
