I can'r comment on your wood question, but I am about 2 hours from finishing my Arctic Hawk. Let me just pass this along...the manual is outstanding, much better than my wifes CH 16LT. Just be sure to both read the instructions and review the pictures prior to each step. There were a few steps in which I got rushed and just started looking at the pics. I didn't end up with any major problems, but just a few "customizations" that only a fellow builder could spot.
