Kurt's suggestion will get you on the water sooner, but yeah, I'm one of those who feel obliged to point out the blemishes to people who are gushing over my creations. Fixing cosmetic problems with scarfs is harder than doing neat scarfs in the first place. You might have to settle for smooth. If there is a little valley to fill in, then I would use wood flour. If you really want to spend some time enhancing it with a veneer inlay, you could create okume veneer from scrap plywood by clamping it to a smooth surface, then planing and sanding it till you only have a thin veneer left. Kurt's suggestion is seeming very wise as I write this...
