This is what worked:

We strapped the two yaks, one on each side to our inflatable. Made sure the bows of the yaks were raised slightly so as to keep them out of the water for the most part. We also attached a lazy sheet to each yak and the inflatable as "insurance" should a strap break or loosen. They towed well with the painter attached to the inflatable and out about 30 feet behind the sail boat. Very well behaved in chop. We both sailed with them and motored with them loosing perhaps 1 kt of speed in both cases, a little more in a strong current.
