Skeg installation

I know there has been a lot of discussion about weathercocking and skegs. At this point I have decided to add a skeg to my 17' Chesapeake. Before I make the first incision, I thought I'd ask to hear about the experience of others who have retrofitted their boat with the retractable skeg.
