adding a small keel...may

I have a chesapeake 16 that I use in the mountain lakes here in Oregon. Tracking is ok,but I would like to improve it. No, I don't want to add a rudder. I was thinking of adding a small keel, maybe just behind the rear bulkhead and extending a few feet aft. I am totally out of any knowledge base on this, and was thinking the keel would be two or so inches deep and narrow, 1 " at it's base. Too short, not long enough, wrong place? As I said, I am winging it, so any thoughts on this idea?
