The gunter (yard) should maintain the same angle relative to the mast when reefed, because that's what the sail's cut for. That means, with the taper, the halyard should not be snugged when the reef attachment point is used, but should be off an inch or two. If that seems a little inefficient, it's typical of all reefing systems!
