Magnets

Hi,

Has anyone ever heard of (or tried) using rare-earth magnets as paddle keepers for calm-water craft? (My wife wants to use her kayak for birding on flat-calm fresh water.)

Rare earth magnets are the type that control the heads of hard drives, and are amazingly strong. (It's difficult to separate two of them by hand once they connect.)

I was thinking of flush mounting two of them into the deck and epoxying their two compadres onto the paddle itself.

The magnets are fairly small (1.5" by .5" or so), come in a variety of cool shapes, and are relatively cheap.

I'm trying to keep the deck as unencumbered as possible...

Thoughts?
