Not sure in the 'States, but here in Australia, many of the interstate bus Lines (Greyhound etc) will ship odd-shaped and big-ish stuff in their cavernous luggage areas for surprisingly cheap. You drop it to them, wrapped and ready-to-go, and the recipient picks it up from the bus-station at the other end.

Some will even do door to door (via affiliated van-couriers) for extra bucks at one or both ends... .
