Which varnish? What's the temperature?

What I've found is that the Schooner varnish sold by CLC works just fine without any thinning - no drips, sags or brush marks - at mid-80's and below. Above 90 degrees, all the thinner in the world doesn't seem to help it. So my feeling is to forego the thinner, apply it first thing in the morning and make sure that the coat is very very thin and close the can very tightly as soon as you've poured off what you need (should be an ounce or less for just the deck).

If it's not Schooner, I'd say try it on a piece of scrap wood first to get the consistency right.
