Mike, I agree the wording of the instruction is confusing. If I understood John's class correctly, the idea is to apply the varnish in areas approximately 18 inches square one square at a time working from one end to the other. That is doing the "wet" coat in one direction eighteen inches and then immediately the "dry" brushing of that same area with the strokes 90 degrees off from the "wet" strokes; then start another "square" immediately adjacent to that area, etc., etc. Of course watching a class doesn't make me an expert and I hope if I'm screwing up this description someone will correct me...
