Varnish drying time?

Posted by James Eager on May 24, 2006

I layed down my first coat of varnish last night and expected it to be dry this afternoon. The can reads 16 hrs at 55 degrees f recoat time...and it should be dry to the touch in 3 hrs. I know the overnight temp may have be a bit lower but the garage is pretty slow to change temp. I used the same schooner varnish last year and do not recall having to wait, in fact I think I was able to lay a coat in the afternoon and wet sand and recoat the next morning prior to work...like 5:30 AM (oh, the smell of varnish in the morning. It smells like victory!).... Anybody have a clue why the long drying time this year?
