X-bar spacing small cars

Hey folks, been busy as heck, and it's been a while. I see most of the usual suspects are still around, good deal!

Got a question, since the price of gas is slowly strangling me, (combined with the first bill for my eldest daughter's college career...Gasp!). I'd like to switch to a more economical form of transportation, but maintain enough crossbar spacing to give support to my Chessy 18. I'm used to the ladder racks on my pick up, but at 14 mpg, it's costing me $75 a week just to commute, let alone any side trips! I looked at a Scion Xb as a potential alternative, but know nothing about the spacing. Anyone with experience in one of them? Any other suggestions for cars that fit the bill?
