Way back when I thought those would be a way to decrease the cost of a kit and it's weight. A big reason for 3/4" wide sheerclamps is to accomodate the 1"x#10 bronze deck rigging screws. If the deck rigging is mounted through the deck that's no screws going into the sheerclamps. If the deck is installed with straps and duct tape you further eliminate the need for ring nails and can use a 1/2x3/4" sheerclamp. No screws, same narrower sheerclamp as is used on a Mill Creek 13, cleaner deck look, and no chance of piercing the sheerclamp with a poorly aimed ringnail or deck screw.
