I found that connecting the shop vac increases the life and improves the functioning of the sanding disks... and really helps with the dust. When I purchased the vac I got some kind of special filter that is supposed to trap smaller particles...'micro' this or 'milli' that. Of course the air exiting the unit can blow crap into the air if you let it (my vac is short and blows out the side)... it really is a great idea though.
