thinning varnish?

I'm about to start varnishing my first boat, and was wondering if I need to thin the varnish. If so, with what & how much. My instructions don't say anything about it, and the can of Schooner varnish dosen't help much either.

Does thinning the varnish just make it easier to apply? Thanks.
