we often spray varnish

It gives you a great looking result. Be advised it WILL use a tad more material, but if you are familiar with spraying you know that. I use a standard suction gun and thin JUST enough to get a good flow. We usually use a small touch up type gun for trim, etc, but I have also used one of my big guns when I had more area to cover.

Here's a shot of my wife shooting some trim from a boat we built in 04.

It's really no big deal to spray varnish.
