skeg design question

Posted by Jamie on Feb 6, 2006

I'm trying to come up with a way to make a retractable skeg that won't leak and won't route control cables all over the deck or be otherwise mechanically complex. I don't want end up with some Rube Goldberg contraption to operate the thing; I want something that is dependable, but keeps a more elegant line to the deck. I found a reference to an automatically extending one built by Ross Leidy, but I'm a little unsure whether I like the failsafe position to be extended.

Anyone have any experience with extending skegs? I was looking at the CLC version, but don't know about all the exposed rigging with it's potential to become fouled.

Any advice would be welcome and appreciated. Thanks, -jamie
