I think it might be a little more efficient for windward work. We have a kayak here in the rafters that has a daggerboard trunk for this reason. I know that one sails well, but so do the ones with the rigid leeboard arrangement. I haven't sailed the daggerboard-equipped boat alongside the standard rig so I don't have any comparative data. Once you put in a trunk you've compromised the kayak's kayak-ness. Extra weight, drag from the trunk opening, etc.
