There are quite a few different alloys of stainLESS. Some of them rust about as well as mild steel, especially the 400 series. Others seem to be resistant to just about anything, 316 is really good. Might be a good idea to test some of the stainless wire in a salt brine solution before deciding to leave it in the boat.
