You guys are absolutely right that there are times when a light kayak is worth the effort and money. That's what I was alluding to when I said that until I'd gotten to the point of diminishing returns with these strategies, I'd stick with the simple strategies. Definitely don't want to compromise back safety, ever. Same for water safety. And of course the advanced athletes out there have already pushed the conditioning part to the point where a lightweight kayak is a necessity. My point was just that the average kayaker had some simple, inexpensive alternatives to shaving ounces.
